Weddings were about tradition and abiding by “the rules” for too long, and they always followed the same pattern. However, we can now discard that outdated rulebook! Your wedding can be whatever you want it to be, and you can definitely get rid of any traditions that don’t feel like you.
Wedding traditions can be wonderful, especially if you appreciate what they add to your special day. Modern weddings are not about feeling forced to follow rules you don’t like or do things you don’t want to do just because they’re expected.
I am going to give you some fun ideas that help you to break the norm on your wedding day. Put your own stamp on your wedding day to make it a day you have always envisioned!
Make Your List
Make a note of all of the wedding traditions and tick and cross off the ones you like and dislike. Once you’ve compiled your hit list, check off any traditions you’re not going to bother with while ensuring you won’t create any problems by breaking these rules.
For instance, formal table arrangements may seem like a hassle, but without a little structure, your guests may not receive the proper meals and the ratio of people to tables may be completely incorrect! Or completely scrap that and have a buffet or order pizza!
If you choose to skip some of the “traditional” wedding components, you might also encounter some disagreement from family and friends. You can either let it be a surprise on the big day, or you can let them know that you’re arranging a wedding that truly embodies your personality and your love story.
Wedding Rules You Could Break
- The First Dance
- Wedding Cake
- Guest List
- The Dress
- Your Suppliers
The First Dance
You might want to rethink the first dance if you feel a little self-conscious about your dancing or just uneasy in the spotlight. After all, nothing is worse than having anxiety or dread on your special day.
You can still pick your first dance song if you don’t want to miss that special moment. Ask all of your other guests to join you on the dance floor instead of keeping all eyes on you and your partner.
Wedding Cake
The old tradition is for the happy couple to cut the first piece of their wedding cake, which is meant to represent their first responsibility as a married couple.
You do not need to cut the cake! Not everyone likes cake so why not switch it up? Instead of a wedding cake, do a pizza cutting or have a donut tower – whatever takes your fancy! You could even have a wedding cake pinata which one of my couples actually did at their wedding! Imagine how much fun you and your guests will have with this! Plus, they make for epic wedding photos.
Guest List
Ditch the wedding guest list! If you don’t want to worry about the hassle of pleasing and inviting everyone then simply don’t do it. You can choose to have an intimate wedding with the ones closest to you or you could elope with just the two of you! There is nothing to say you can’t have a party with everyone else after the wedding to celebrate.
Remember, your wedding day is all about you so do not feel the need to please others!
The Dress
If you want to keep the dress then do it, but maybe you don’t like the idea of a traditional white dress… I get it! Design your own dress or find the dress of your dreams – it could be something super colourful!
As trends shift and more couples choose comfort over style, some have started wearing skirts, jumpsuits and suits. They are no longer just for males, but for everyone now! Whether you glam it up on the inside or go all out with colours, patterns, or textures outside, you will have a stylish wedding that you love!
Your Suppliers
You choose the wedding suppliers that best reflect your personality! By this I mean the person themself, what they offer and their style. You should always get to know your suppliers, from your photographer to your buffet supplier. If you get to know them, you will understand whether you get along with them – your wedding is a big day and you want it to go smoothly!
If you are looking for a bright, bold and colourful wedding then I may be the photographer for you! I understand and appreciate your style so I can capture the best photos for you to remember the day.
